What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure (3DS) is a security protocol designed to provide an additional layer of security for online credit and debit card transactions, most notably by shifting the liability for fraudulent card-not-present (CNP) transactions from the merchant to the card issuer. The latest version, EMV 3-D Secure (3DS2), enhances this process by enabling a frictionless flow for over 90% of transactions through risk-based authentication, while only requiring a challenge for high-risk purchases, significantly improving the customer experience and reducing cart abandonment.
